On January, 26th the Coordination Council meeting of the historical and cultural project took place in the Cultural Fund “Por-Bajin Fortress” on preservation of the object of federal value “Por-Bajin”.

At the meeting the basic issues of realization of the project in 2008 were discussed by the scientific circles. “First of all, we are going to continue the archeological and restoration work in the central building and in some other objects. Great work should also be done on the fort constructions. The gate is a kind of “key” to the memorial, one of the main points of the work”, - noted one of the scientific supervisors of the project the Doctor of Arts Tigran Mkrtitchev.

This year the archeological work is planned to be continued for three months, from June to September, divided into two sessions. It is planned that besides the students of Moscow, St.Petersburg, Tuva and Kazan State Universities and Krasnoyarsk State Pedagogical University, the group of archeologists from Stavropol State University will take part in the excavation. Representatives of some foreign educational institutions will also join them.

The scientists from Bern and Bradford Universities have already agreed to participate in the project. The representatives of the public association “Republican Cultural Center of Uigurs in Kazakhstan” have also shown their interest to the archeological work. The scientists think, that the further work on “opening” the yard constructions is not very perspective, as all the yards have identical constructions, and the increasing of the excavation area will considerably complicate the preservation of these objects.

In 2008 it will be very important for the project to settle the questions, connected with the further exhibiting. The restorers will do a lot of work; they are going to spend a “full” archeological season in “Por-Bajin” this year. They should do some experiments and researches connected with preservation of wooden constructions of the memorial.

“In the near future we should state the basic tasks to create the conception of opening a museum. This year it is necessary to develop a clear archeological base for future exhibiting”, - said the head of the natural science block, the candidate of historical science Irina Arzhantseva. “We would also like to organize a field seminar this year with the participation of wide range of experts and to acquaint the scientific circles with the unique technologies which we used while making researches”, - noted Arzhantseva.

This year it is also planned to do very interesting research to study the permafrost process in the memorial. The representatives of geocryology (permafrostology) department of geological faculty in M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University are ready to work at the project and have already made some offers. In February – March it is planned to start the drilling work, which will help to study the process in the lake Tere - Hol. The hydrologists from Moscow State University will join the permafrostologists; they will continue the complex of researches, started last year.

The dean assistant of the geographical faculty in the Moscow State University Andrey Panin reported on some interesting results about the dating of the earthquake; the results were made in one of the Swedish laboratories.

This year the work will also be done in the settlement Shagonar – III, which is synchronous to Por-Bajin, as the scientists suggest. "Today Por-Bajin is in a kind of historical vacuum – our primary task is "to put" this memorial into the general archeological context ", - noted Tigran Mkrtitchev.

Vladimir Zavyalov, the research worker of Material Culture History Institute of the Russian Academy of Science will direct the work.

It is also planned to continue the development of the further use of the memorial - the creation of the multifunctional museum, which can be used as a forest reserve or a national park “Por-Bajin” with an opportunity to attract tourists and to develop the area.

The scientists and architects made some suggestions, which will be discussed at the meeting of organizing committee of Cultural fund “Por-Bajin Fortress” on February, 8th, 2008.
